Milli Vanilli Biopic Moves Forward With Writer-Director Florian Gallenberger

"Milli Vanilli Biopic Moves Forward With Writer-Director Florian Gallenberger"src="http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news_img/23125/Milli_Vanilli_23125.jpg"style="border: 1px solid black;margin:1px;margin-left:5px;position:relative;"align="right"vspace="3">The story of lip-synching early 90s duo Milli Vanilli is tailor-made for some kind of rise and fall biopic, and that exact project has been in the worksat least since 2007, though you know at least a few ambitious producers have been eyeing the rights from the moment their Grammy was taken away in 1990. Now after years in development, a writer-director has finally boarded the project-- according toDeadline, German Oscar-winner Florian Gallenberger will take the reins and start writing a script immediately.

Gallenberger won the Oscar for Best Live-Action short in 2000, and also directed the German feature filmJohn Rabe, which starred Steve Buscemi and won four German FIlm Awards in 2009 (no, I have no idea why I've never heard of this movie before). The Milli Vanilli story also has significant German connections-- the man who put them together in the first place was German-born Frank Farian; he's also the guy who exposed the lip-synching scandal when it became too obvious to ignore. The project sounds like a great debut for Gallenberger as he begins his American movie career; casting speculation about how might play the Milli Vanilli guys themselves begins now!

Watch Topher Grace Re-Enact BTTF, Ghostbusters And More In This Take Me Home Tonight Video

"Watch Topher Grace Re-Enact BTTF, Ghostbusters And More In This Take Me Home Tonight Video"src="http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news_img/23111/Take_Me_Home_Tonight_23111.jpg"style="border: 1px solid black;margin:1px;margin-left:5px;position:relative;"align="right"vspace="3">Take Me Home Tonightis not a parody movie, in any sense. Instead it’s a period comedy set in 1988 starring Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Teresa Palmer, and Dan Fogler celebrating the last night of their youth. It’s definitely not a parody movie, but the following video may make you wish it was.

We’ve just gotten our hands on aTake Me Home Tonightmusic video, in which the cast hangs out in a club rocking out, only to decide that instead of dancing they should re-enact the most iconic moments of nearly all the most iconic movies of the 80s right there on the dance floor. The video is less than four minutes long but in that time they manage rather accurately to pull off all the most iconic and identifiable scenes from more than thirty movies. Include in the sequence is a pretty spot on Michael J. Fox impression by Topher Grace and cameos by ALF and Michael Biehn.

You’ve got to see this. Watch and see how many movies you can name:

There's a chance this may end up in the end credits ofTake Me Home Tonightwhen it shows up in theaters on March 4th. It's a good time, seems like a smart move to me.

In the meantime, how many movies being parodied did you recognize? Here’s a list of the film's I spotted while watching:

Alien

Say Anything

Dirty Dancing

Ghostbusters

Weird Science

Ghost

16 Candles

Pee Wee’s Big Adventure

The Karate Kid

E.T.

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

When Harry Met Sally

Teen Wolf

Back to the Future

Risky Business

Indiana Jones

The Shining

Weekend at Bernie’s

Fast Times at Ridgemont High

Stanley Tucci, Bill Nighy And John Kassir Cast In Jack The Giant Killer

"Stanley Tucci, Bill Nighy And John Kassir Cast In Jack The Giant Killer"src="http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news_img/23075/Stanley_Tucci_23075.jpg"style="border: 1px solid black;margin:1px;margin-left:5px;position:relative;"align="right"vspace="3">Back in late November it looked like the next big actor race would be for the leads in Bryan Singer'sJack The Giant Killer. Ashortlistfor both Jack and the princess came online, with names like Aaron Johnson, Nicholas Hoult, Lily Collins, and Juno Temple. Two months later we still don't have any idea who will be playing the leads, but we do have our villain.

THRreports that Singer has hired Stanley Tucci to play the villain in his fairy tale film. Before you start imagining a sixty-foot tall Stanley Tucci, however, it should be noted that he won't be playing a giant. Instead, the veteran actor will play an assistant to the throne with plans to usurp power (think Jafar inAladdinwithout the Gilbert Gottfried parrot). But while Tucci won't be playing a giant in the film, Bill Nighy and John Kassir will. The two will work together to play Fallon, the two-headed leader of the giants. In the story, written by longtime Singer collaborator Christopher McQuarrie, the longstanding truce between giants and humans is tested when a princess is kidnapped and a young farmer, named Jack, leads a rescue mission to find her.

While we may not know who will be playing the characters that we will be rooting for, they've already managed to knock it out of the park in the villain department. Stanley Tucci is never not awesome, and this kind of underhanded character is right in his wheelhouse. As for Nighy and Kassir, all you have to do is imagine a giant with the voices of Davy Jones and The Crypt Keeper. Like I said, perfect.

Deal Between MGM And Sony May Result In The Release Of Red Dawn And Cabin In The Woods

"Deal Between MGM And Sony May Result In The Release Of Red Dawn And Cabin In The Woods"src="http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news_img/23067/mgm_23067.jpg"style="border: 1px solid black;margin:1px;margin-left:5px;position:relative;"align="right"vspace="3">With MGM finally achieving financial stability, nearly all of the headlines have been focused on the studio's two biggest breadwinners:The Hobbitand James Bond. But while those two projects have been greenlit and given shooting schedules, questions remain about the Joss Whedon-scriptedCabin in the Woodsand the remake ofRed Dawn. Both projects have been completed and in the can for months, but due to MGM's issues their theatrical future has been up in the air. Today we learn that they may finally be coming.

The Los Angeles Timesis reporting that Sony and MGM are currently closing in on a distribution and co-financing deal that would link the two companies for both old projects, likeCabin in the WoodsandRed Dawn, and new projects, like the next two Bond films. The agreement would see Sony provide 50% of the budget forBond 23and 25% ofBond 24(presumably because MGM would actually have some money of their own by then). The deal would be similar to the one struck by the two companies for both of the previous two 007 movies,Casino RoyaleandQuantum of Solace. Sony would also take distribution control of the aforementioned completed titles as well as MGM's 4,000-title library on DVD (Fox currently holds the rights to the DVD library, but the contract expires in September).

Though the report says that the two are finalizing the deal, there is some concern that it may not all play out, as a source close to the negotiations said,"there are a number of complex terms still to be hammered out and that it's not certain a deal will be completed."Sony isn't the only company interested in handling distribution for MGM, particularly the Bond franchise, with Paramount Pictures, 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. (who are handling the distribution forThe Hobbit) talking to the classic studio at one point.

Another aspect to the deal is that MGM wants to have a piece of films already in production. Because MGM was struggling for so long, the studio won't have a movie ready to be released until late 2012, which is a long time away. One project in particular that has peaked the studio's interest is David Fincher's adaptation ofThe Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. While discussions are on-going regarding that title, MGM also inquired about a piece of Marc Webb's upcomingSpider-Manreboot, but were turned down.

It's all very technical, but if the deal works out we might be able to seeCabin in the WoodsandRed Dawnbefore the end of the year. For those wondering, that's a good thing.

Cobie Smulders In Final Negotiations To Play Maria Hill In The Avengers

"Cobie Smulders In Final Negotiations To Play Maria Hill In The Avengers"src="http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news_img/23043/cobie_smulders_23043.jpg"style="border: 1px solid black;margin:1px;margin-left:5px;position:relative;"align="right"vspace="3">Before all of the madness that was Super Bowl Sunday and the new trailers forCaptainn America: The First AvengerandThor, the big Marvel story was that Cobie Smulders, best known for playing Robin on the CBS hit sitcomHow I Met Your Mother, was the top choice to playS.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hillin 2012'sThe Avengers. Just two days later she's gone from"frontrunner"to"has the part."

THRreports that Smulders and Marvel are now in final negotiations to have the actress play a part in the major superhero movie. In the comics, Hill is one of the highest ranking officers in the secretive organization and has previously taken control as Exectutive Director in Nick Fury's (Samuel L. Jackson) absence. The character's most famous storyline is during"Civil War"when she, alongside Tony Stark/Iron Man, attempts to enact the Superhuman Registration Act and locks away any superhero that doesn't comply. Smulders will be one of, so far, two female S.H.I.E.L.D. members, the other being Scarlett Johansson as The Black Widow.

As was mentioned this past weekend, Smulders was director Joss Whedon's choice to play Wonder Woman in what ended up being a failed project, and she seems to be quite a good fit for the role. But now we are left with another question: are they going to make her cut her hair?

Extended Version Of The Pirates: On Stranger Tides Super Bowl Tralier

But why settle for only 30-seconds? Proving once again that they are without question the most fan-friendly, internet-friendly movie studio in Hollywood Disney has released not only those thirty-seconds ofPiratesbut another 30 more in an extended version of theOn Stranger TidesSuper Bowl teaser.

The teaser has all the things you love about Pirates, namely Jack Sparrow and a lot more. I’m particularly excited by some of the swordfighting sequences which you’ll see flash past. That’s something the original movie nailed but the two sequels never seemed to get right. On Stranger Tidesseems to get swordplay right. Watch:

The King's Speech Clears Up Animal Rights Issues

"The King's Speech Clears Up Animal Rights Issues"src="http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news_img/23013/the_king_s_speech_23013.jpg"style="border: 1px solid black;margin:1px;margin-left:5px;position:relative;"align="right"vspace="3">Never underestimate the power of literally anything to sway the Oscar race. Nothing is ever set in stone until the ultimate prize is handed out. It’s like a Presidential election with ten candidates. What does a voter do if he or she is supporting a lesser nominee with little to no chance of winning? Do you stick with your gut, or do you vote for one of the front runners simply because you don’t want another front runner to win? These arethe issues that ultimately determine who gets the Academy Award. Well, that and animal rights.

According toThe Hollywood Reporter,The King’s Speechwas threatened with a lawsuit by animal rights group The American Humane Society over its use of the phrase“No animals were harmed” during the closing credits. Most people don’t realize that’s a real stamp of approval placed on a film by The American Humane Society after script reviews and a set visit. Problem being that the AHS had nothing to do with theKing's Speechproduction.

When the story first broke, many were openly speculating on the possibility of backlash from the Academy’s numerous animal rights activists, but just as the gossip was heating up, the two sides resolved their dispute. Apparently, no animals were harmed in the making ofThe King’s Speech, but as a British production, The American Humane Society was not involved. The company simply wanted the Oscar contender to remove said phrasing. All has been taken care of, and now voters will be left to mull over the merits of each picture on their own. At least until another issue pops up.

James Franco Wanted For Oz: The Great And Powerful

"James Franco Wanted For Oz: The Great And Powerful"src="http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news_img/23009/james_franco_23009.jpg"style="border: 1px solid black;margin:1px;margin-left:5px;position:relative;"align="right"vspace="3">The number of projects that James Franco is signing on to borders on parody. In addition to trying to get a graduate degree at Yale, Franco has signed on to write, director and/or star in no less than nine projects. Now I'm beginning to think that there's something go wrong with him mentally.

THRreports that Franco is now the frontrunner to star in Sam Raimi'sOz, the Great and Powerful. It was just two weeks ago thatRobert Downey Jr., another actor with an airtight schedule, was forced to drop the movie, at which time it was rumored that Johnny Depp would be stepping into his place. According to the new report, Depp actually took meetings about the role, but decided that it wasn't for him. Franco, of course, has plenty of experience working with Raimi, having starred in all three of hisSpider-Manmovies as Harry Osborn. In the film, a prequel of sorts toThe Wizard of Oz, would see Franco play the Wizard as an expert con man who, after a ballooning accident, lands in the magical land of Oz. Starting up a relationship with Good Witch Glinda, they hatch a plan to get rid of her two evil sisters. While there is no start date just yet, the plan is to start filming in the latter half of this year.

While I can definitely see Franco playing this role, I really am afraid that the guy is spreading himself too thin. The guy is immensely talented, but if he keeps working at this pace he's going to burn out before he turns 40. Perhaps if he does decide to sign on to this one, he'll decide to postpone one of the others.

Even More Captain America Images Surface Online

"Even More Captain America Images Surface Online"src="http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news_img/22976/Captain_America_The_First_Avenger_22976.jpg"style="border: 1px solid black;margin:1px;margin-left:5px;position:relative;"align="right"vspace="3">Earlier this week, the cover for the new issue of Empire came online, giving us yetanother look at the heroof what should be one of this summer's biggest blockbusters:Captain America: The First Avenger. But, as I said then, it was unlikely that it would be the only new image from the film that they would be printing and today I've been proven right.

Screen Cravehas gotten their hands on some scans from the inside of the newest issue ofEmpirethat provide looks at an assortment of characters, including the first shots of Richard Armitage as Heinz Kruger and even a teeny, tiny look at Tommy Lee Jones, who plays Col. Chester Phillips. The spread also gives us another look at Chris Evans in full Cap uniform (including helmet), once again making the argument that he looks totally badass.

Kristen Stewart Enters Negotiations To Star In Snow White And The Huntsman

"Kristen Stewart Enters Negotiations To Star In Snow White And The Huntsman"src="http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news_img/22964/kristen_stewart_22964.jpg"style="border: 1px solid black;margin:1px;margin-left:5px;position:relative;"align="right"vspace="3">Snow White and the Huntsmanwas doing so well. In the last month the Universal take on the picture has managed to get both Charlize Theron and Viggo Mortensen to play the Evil Queen and the Huntsman, respectively. Now, sadly, it appears they have decided to take a detour.

THRreports that Kristen Stewart, aspreviously rumored, has entered negotiations to play the fairy tale princess inSnow White and The Huntsman. Of the three Snow White films currently in production, this project is the first to find their female lead, discounting Natalie Portman who, because of her pregnancy, will most likely be unavailable for Disney'sSnow White and The Seven. Back in December there was a shortlist that contained largely unknown actresses including Riley Keough, Felicity Jones, Bella Heathcoat and Alicia Vikander, though there was the looming possibility that the studio would go with a known name, such as Stewart, Dakota Fanning and Saoirse Ronan.

The news comes right on the heels of Stewart no longer having a part in the race to play Lois Lane in Zack Snyder'sSupermanreboot, and I highly doubt that this is an unrelated event. With theTwilightfranchise quickly coming to an end, Stewart needs to start capitalizing on her current fame by collecting projects. For now we'll just have to deal with the fact that we'll be getting a stone-faced, lip-biting Snow White.

Joseph Gordon Levitt Enters Talks For The Dark Knight Rises

"Joseph Gordon Levitt Enters Talks For The Dark Knight Rises"src="http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news_img/22944/joseph_gordon_levitt_22944.jpg"style="border: 1px solid black;margin:1px;margin-left:5px;position:relative;"align="right"vspace="3">For months and months there was constant rumor that Joseph Gordon Levitt, one of the breakout stars of Christopher Nolan'sInception, would be playing the role of The Riddler in Nolan's final Batman film,The Dark Knight Rises. After Gordon Levitt'sInceptionco-star, Tom Hardy was hired and the Riddler rumors were put to rest, however, the rumors of his involvement died down severely. Turns out that may have been premature.

Deadlineis reporting that Joseph Gordon Levitt has entered talks for a part in the Batman finale. In true Nolan fashion, it's unknown what role Gordon Levitt will play, but hopefully we'll find out sometime soon (before the anticipation kills us). Just yesterday it was announced that the movie will be shooting in May, which will likely be long after the completion of Rian Johnson'sLooper, in which Gordon Levitt is starring and just started production.

Words can't describe how happy this makes me. Joseph Gordon Levitt is easily one of the best young talents working today and elevates everything he does. Even if the role he plays ends up being a bum on a Gotham street corner it will somehow make the movie better. Let's just hope that this isn't another rumor.

Interview: The Way Back's Jim Sturgess

"Interview: The Way Back's Jim Sturgess"src="http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news_img/22753/jim_sturgess_22753.jpg"style="border: 1px solid black;margin:1px;margin-left:5px;position:relative;"align="right"vspace="3">Imagine hiking 4,000 miles. Now imagine doing that hike over icy tundra and a seemingly unending desert. Now imagine having no food and barely any supplies. Now imagine that you are meant to be the strongest member of your party, which consists entirely of inmates who have escaped from the gulag. It’s hard enough to even think about that level of pain, but in Peter Weir’sThe Way Back, Jim Sturgess lives it.

I recently had the opportunity to sit down in a roundtable interview with the young actor to discuss his newest film. Talking about accessing his character, meeting actual survivors of the journey, and working with a tight nit cast and crew, it was a fascinating look behind the scenes of a truly epic film. Check out the interview below.

Was it easier shooting on location because you didn't have to imagine yourself freezing like you would have on a sound stage?

Yeah, actually it's true. It took me a while because I'm like,“God, I'm just not giving a performance here,” because most of the time it was totally real. You know what I mean? So yeah, there was no acting required when you're freezing cold and Peter Weir's going, “Okay, you've got to be freezing cold.” It's like, “Yeah, I'm there. I think I can do that.”

How did you come to this project?

Peter was seeing actors in London and we sort of knew that he was in town. Peter asked to see me within the group of other English actors kind of thing. So I went down to a hotel in London to go and meet him, but I was actually filming another film at the time. We'd been doing night shoots so I hadn't even been in bed. You know, I'd been filming all night and had gone home, splashed some water on my face, just like,“Come on, get yourself together.” So I went down to go and meet him and it was a fairly kind of lucid meeting to say the least. {laughs} Because when you're filming it's just impossible - it takes every moment of your life. I'd managed to flip through the script. I had a vague idea of what it wasall about, however I went totally underprepared for Peter Weir who's probably the most detailed and prepared man you could possibly meet in life. You know, it wasn't the greatest meeting from my point of view, and he was so kind. We talked and he told me all about what the film was about and what hewas hoping to do."

"But I left sort of feeling like I hadn't done enough for myself, you know? I felt kind of disappointed. I felt,“Well, fuck it, I'm just going to put myself on tape and write him a letter and hope for the best.” So I did that and luckily that seemed to seal the deal as it were.

Are the tapes going to be on the DVD?

They're in the film. We spliced them in and no one even knows {laughs}. I don't know. I have no idea. It was horrible. It was like in this hotel room. I was just kind of holding the camera.

How do you access this Polish character?

We had books and documentaries, just sort of giving us a historical background of the time and what was kind of going on for these people. Finding out about the camps and what people went through. I managed to track down real Polish survivors who were living in England, so I was really lucky to be able to do that. I met up with three or four people who this had really happened to, who would give me first-hand information about certain things. And then one guy had not only survived the gulag system but escaped, so to meet a real escapee for me who was playing this escapee, I was so pleased that we managed to track him down.

I went to his home in England and met his family - his son and his wife. They were living proof that he made a life for himself. He had a son who's now in his 40s. It was a really eye-opening sort of experience to sit in a room with someone who that had really happened to, who wasn't particularly strong-looking. Even in his photographs he showed me, as a boy he wasn't a tough-looking guy at all. He was regular, normal guy. And then to sort of realize, which was my biggest shock I think, that it didn't happen that long ago because he was right there in front of me.

To me, I learned some stuff about the Nazis and the German invasion, but nothing really about the Soviet side. But it always felt like any of the research I was doing with Peter and any of the books he was giving me and the documentaries, it was always that grey, black and white image of a camp or a person or whatever. So in your mind you're able to just pretend that that happened years and years and years and years ago, and here was someone who was sitting next to me reminding me that it was a pretty recent tragedy.

What did he tell you that informed your character? Was there something he said that stuck with you throughout filming?

God, his sense of humor probably. He still had a lot of his humanity intact. He was still able to find things in the stories he told me. I remember him belly laughing telling me this story about when they used to huddle around one blanket, one person would pump up a fart and he thought that was hilarious. But yeah, just loads. As a boy as young as he was, pulling clothes off of dead people that he knew just to keep warm. Stealing the half-deads' clothing because he knew that they were gone, even though they hadn't gone. You knew they had no chance so you would take their clothes because you wanted to get first dibs on them. That's a hard thing to know that you've done that and you've seen that, and to go to bed with that every night. He was full of stories like that.

Peter Weir was very deliberate in using actual events to create a fictional story. How beholden did you to the actual events?

We were sort of guided by Peter in that sense. He would set up the scenarios or whatever, and I think we all just had total faith in whatever he was doing. So I personally didn't feel the pressure for the particular scenes, just as long as I felt like I captured what Peter wanted which was a sort of real man, not a hero but forced into this particular situation, that he wasn't some sort of survival expert.

We talked about how he might {know about survival}. Peter said,“Where do you think he gets all this from? How much do you think he knows about the outdoors?” We came up with a whole backstory about the Polish boy scouts. I found out a whole history of the Polish boy scouts that were operating around the areas that we felt my character might have come from. Sowe felt, 'Okay, so he's got a boy scout knowledge of survival,' you know? From my point of view it's just to try and keep Janusz as real as possible.

Do you have to be reliant on Peter Weir to make sure the subject matter is treated with respect, yet you're not making a film that plays like this is an“important movie so therefore everything we do is important” in tone?

Yeah, we sort of knew, and even from the nature of the script... The script on paper was quite a bizarre read because it was really Peter's director's notes even. You knew it didn't read like an average Hollywood movie. You sort of go, 'What's going to happen?' So I think we all really pretty quickly knew what Peter was trying to do and sort of strip everything down, even emotionally.

From an acting perspective, there was no scenes of, you know, me and Colin {Farrell} sort of crying as we said good-bye at the border and giving each other a hug as he hands over his knife. It was like, 'No, that's not real.' Certainly people who went through this quite very young, even my dad's generation, I had to teach him how to give you a hug. You know what I mean? So, yeah, Peter was very cautious, and for us too, when to turn on the emotional tap. But he talked about the more you hold it down, the more powerful it sort of becomes. That's when you watch it, when I watched it for maybe the second or third time - I've seen it three times now - that it really becomes more apparent. You see the real details in everybody. There's no tricks. You know, you're not going,“Okay, I'm going to do my crying scene now. This is going to be really emotional,” and then I'd think about dying puppies and burst into tears. You know, there's something that you can feel is really held deep down. But that was Peter's guidance, definitely for all of us.

What did you take away from spending so much time as a group?

A lot. So much so that it's sort of impossible to put down on paper. I guess it all comes into your subconscious, really. You're just spending time with really interesting, really amazing people. To spend time with Ed Harris...he's an acting hero of mine so that's a big deal for me. But no, just to be in a film with him where you might have a couple of scenes, or you might do a few scenes together and then you've got a few days off. We were on set all day, every day, all together going through this epic sort of journey. We all feel bound for life by that.

Are there any really exhilarating moments while you were shooting that you can recall?

Yeah, I mean there were loads because as much as it was hard, and it was difficult at times - it was a very physical film - but almost as much as it was hard all the time, that was what sort of energized you the most. I mean to film out in the Sahara Desert and to be woken up, as often happens when you're making a film you have to get up at like four or five in the morning, to sort of be woken up by that prayer that they pray, that they blast over the loudspeakers. As you wake up to sort of Morocco coming to life and you drive a two hour journey through the desert as the sun is rising over the sand dunes...I saw landscapes and visual stuff that I'll never forget. It was special.

For me, it was a life experience; it wasn't just making a film. We had our own journey that we all had making the film. Friends were made with such a {great} team of people, from the makeup team to the costume team to the lighting guys, the camera department. You're a traveling circus. We went on this sort of epic adventure and bonds were made. It was just a huge, big deal. And then we wrapped in India with all those kids kind of around us, it was really quite powerful and emotional. And then you've got the gift of the film at the end.

"First Clip From James Cameron Produced Sanctum"src="http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news_img/22756/sanctum_22756.jpg"style="border: 1px solid black;margin:1px;margin-left:5px;position:relative;"align="right"vspace="3">It’s clear to marketers now that simply putting James Cameron’s name on something, even if it’s just as executive producer, will get people interested in your film. The film was directed by newcomer Alister Grierson who’s hoping to make his mark with a big 3D feature debut, and with Cameron’s guidance he may have done it.

Sanctumfollows a group of underwater cave divers forced deeper and deeper into the depths of our planet. The trailers will have you think it’s a monster movie but that’s not the case. Across the pond,HeyUGuysgot their hands on the first clip fromSanctumshowing off a massive underwater cathedral that had never been seen by human eyes, a momentous find for the crew.

We all know that James Cameron can direct action and I’m sure he helped out onSanctumeven if it was just from the EP chair. Check out the clip below and sound off about what you think about this movie when it hits theaters February 4.

Peter Jackson Hospitalized, Hobbit Filming Delayed Again

If so, you were wrong. Here’s another problem for the already difficulty plagued production: Peter Jackson’s health.

Stuffreports that Peter Jackson checked into a hospital with a perforated ulcer. He underwent surgery and is now resting comfortably. It sounds like he’s going to be ok but, as confirmed by a publicist working withThe Hobbitproduction, it will cause“a slight delay to the start of filming” on the movie. Forget the movie though, what is making this film doing to Peter Jackson’s wellbeing?

He’s ok for now but some doctors believe that physical stressincreases the riskof developing ulcers like the one Jackson suffered from. For the past year, Peter Jackson has looked nothing but stressed, andThe Hobbithas been the cause of it. He didn’t want to direct it, but was sort of forced into it, and once he was plopped into the middle of it, was immediately under assault from all sides as at every turn the project threatened to crumble around him. That has to take a toll on you eventually. Maybe this was why he didn’t want to directit in the first place. We all really want to seeThe Hobbitbut, take care Peter. You’ve already given us three amazing Middle Earth movies, if that’s all you’ve got in you, then that’s all you’ve got.

Get well soon Sir Peter. Eat something! After all, maybe the answer is to bring back this guy,the fat Peter Jackson who wore womens' glasses:

fat peter jackson

That guy with the pipe above, portly and dirty and badly dressed though he was... always seemed so much happier than this guy, the skinny, sad Peter Jackson with fashion sense who directed subpar movies likeThe Lovely Bonesand is now stressing out somewhere in New Zealand:

Mark Ruffalo To Play A Sex Addict In Thanks For Sharing

Playing a character that was both funny and pensive, the actor was a joy to watch on screen. Lucky for us, he plans on working with the same writer again.

The Daily Mailis reporting that Ruffalo will be reteaming withKids Are All Rightco-writer Stuart Blumberg forThanks For Sharing. An original screenplay by Blumberg, who will also direct the film, Ruffalo will play a one of three sex addicts in a recovery clinic. The movie will be the directorial debut for Blumberg, who was formally a writer onMadTVand wrote the Edward Norton filmKeeping The Faithas well as the comedyThe Girl Next Door. Production for the film will likely work around Ruffalo's schedule as the actor is set to appear in Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble filmThe Avengers, which will be shooting from April to September.

While Ruffalo has always been around, one gets the sense that he is going to finally start getting the recognition that he deserves. He is easily one of the more under appreciated actors working today and can balance both comedy and drama equally well. If Ruffalo's involved, that's reason enough to be interested.

First Look At Taylor Lautner's Abduction

"First Look At Taylor Lautner's Abduction"src="http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news_img/22764/taylor_lautner_22764.jpg"style="border: 1px solid black;margin:1px;margin-left:5px;position:relative;"align="right"vspace="3">Say what you want about Kristen Stewart but, at least she’s not cashing in on herTwilightfame to show up in mega-blockbusters where she probably doesn’t belong. Instead, outside ofTwilightshe’s stuck with edgy, challenging little indie movies. Now that it’s Taylor Lautner’s turn to step outside theTwilightworld, he’s taking a different path, and going straight to the mega-blockbusters.

He’ll show up in his first non-Twilightstarring role (though he did have that glorified cameo inValentine’s Daylast year) in the action thrillerAbduction. It stars Lautner as a young man who discovers the people who raised him aren’t his real parents, a discovery which triggers a series of events that leave him on the run for his life. Lilly Cole and Sigourney Weaver co-star and John Singleton is directing.

The movie’s not due in theaters until September 23rd but we’ve got your first look right here. Three photos, one from the set, two straight from one of the film’s reels. Click each photo to see it bigger:

It’ll be interesting to see if Lautner’sTwilightfame will translate into such a completely different film genre. To date, it hasn’t really worked out for either Kristen Stewart or Robert Pattinson, mired in a world of indie-films that have been all but ignored. Maybe going straight to high-octane action movies is the right movie for America’s most famous, heavily-muscled lycan.

Here’s the proof, a new photo of Ian McShane as Blackbeard just handed over to us by Disney, in which he’s thrusting his sword at the camera. Rarely does a lot of thrusting things at the camera ever happen in anything that isn’t shot in 3D, though, maybe it should.

The image, unlike the movie, is in 2D and the whole thrusting the sword at that camera thing still looks pretty cool. I don’t really need annoying glasses to enjoy it. It’s a great shot. Enjoy it in 2D below.

Kevin Smith To Sell Red State Via Public Auction

"Kevin Smith To Sell Red State Via Public Auction"src="http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news_img/22766/red_state_22766.jpg"style="border: 1px solid black;margin:1px;margin-left:5px;position:relative;"align="right"vspace="3">While many seem to disagree with director Kevin Smith’s somewhat baffling recent stance on things likethe media and film criticism, you have to give the guy at least a little credit: Those views have resulted in a genuine attempt at industry innovation. Fed up with the Hollywood system of production and promotion Smith has cast all of it aside for his new movie,Red State, which he funded independently and plans to promote independently as well, using his series of wildly popularpodcaststo raise awareness.

Red Statemakes its debut in Park City at the Sundance Film Festival this weekend and, Kevin plans to keep right on thinking outside the box with his movie. He long ago announced that, unlike every other film being screened at the festival,Red Statewill not hold screenings for either press or industry attendees. Those screenings are normally particularly critical for a movie likeRed Statesince the film doesn’t have a distributor and, normally, the only reason a filmmaker like Smith brings his movie to Sundance is in the hopes of finding someone to buy it.

Even though he doesn’t plan to hold a screening for the distributors who might buy his film, Kevin does want to sell it andVarietyhas a line on how he plans to pull it off. Here’s the answer: Public auction. Immediately following the film’s first public screening on Monday a public auction will be held right in front of the mostly fan-filled crowd in which attendees will be allowed to bid against each other for the rights to distributeRed State. Smith has in the past stated that he hopes for a $6 to $8 million sale. That seems like a rather dicey proposition, it’s hard to imagine studio execs willing to commit millions of dollars by waving their hands at a director in front of a live studio audience, but it has the advantage of having never been tried. Variety speculates that Smith may not care if he sells the film or not, and could have a backup plan for self-distribution. If you’re a regular listener to Kevin’s podcasts, as I am, he’s always been adamant about wanting to sell the movie to a distributor, yet at the same time his conversations frequently seem to revolve around the notion of self-distribution through DVD and other formats whichskip the theatrical model entirely. For now Kevin has yet to confirm this bit of speculation, and since he’s currently trudging through the snow in Park City, is unlikely to do so until the big hubbub of Sunday is over.

It’s all part of the sideshow like atmosphere which has begun to spring up around the movie’s Sundance debut. The film is loosely based on the infamous Westboro Baptist Church and its founder Fred Phelps, and they’re planning a protest out front, which will already make things pretty crazy. Smithhas been arguing with Phelps daughter Megan this week onTwitter. Meanwhile a group called The Harvey Boys (who will also run the auction) have also been attempting to rally together fans in order to stage counter-protests in which they’ll shout and wave around silly, comedic slogans protesting irrelevant things as a way of satirizing what the Westboro group plans to do.

Bottom line: For better or worse this will be a Sundance screening unlike any other ever held in the history of Park City. Our own Katey Rich will be at the screening on Sunday, expect a full report from her shortly afterward.

Close Up Look At Spider-Man In Action With Mechanical Webshooters

"Close Up Look At Spider-Man In Action With Mechanical Webshooters"src="http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news_img/22768/spider_man_22768.jpg"style="border: 1px solid black;margin:1px;margin-left:5px;position:relative;"align="right"vspace="3">Here’s our first close-up look at Andrew Garfield’s full Spider-Man costume in action. Last week Sony releasedthis official imageof Peter Parker in his Spidey outfit, but left out his mask and, incidentally, his webshooters too. This new photo seems to confirm the speculation that Marc Webb's movie will have Spider-Man using mechanical webshooters.

Those little metal discs on Spidey's arms the first evidence of real departure from Sam Raimi’s vision for the character. Raimi ditched the mechanical webshooters traditional in the comics, in favor of giving Peter Parker organic web slinging ability. Webs simply sprouted out of his wrists. While fans originally resisted Raimi’s vision, after the first movie, everyone seemed to be on board. Now we’ll have to readjust all over again.

Alex Pettyfer Being Courted For The Mortal Instruments

"Alex Pettyfer Being Courted For The Mortal Instruments"src="http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news_img/22736/alex_pettyfer_22736.jpg"style="border: 1px solid black;margin:1px;margin-left:5px;position:relative;"align="right"vspace="3">IfHarry PotterandTwilighthave taught us anything, it's that there are millions of young people out there ready to burn through their savings at the box office. There's a problem, however: both franchises are now on their last book, the finalHarry Pottermovie being released this summer andTwilightbeing released in two parts, the last of which arrives in late 2012. As a result, studios are scrambling to find the next big franchise, and Screen Gems believes that they have found their money maker inThe Mortal Instrumentsand Alex Pettyfer.

Vulturereports that the Sony subsidiary has offered the young British actor the lead role in the adaptation of the Cassandra Clare series, but there's a catch. Apparently studio chief Clint Culpepper is so insistent about getting Pettyfer as his lead that should he turn it down, the project will be canceled. The young actor is on the verge of breaking out this year with two movies,I Am Number FourandBeastly, set to be released in the next few months. In the series, a young girl becomes involved with a group known as the"Shadowhunters"who find and kill demons on the streets of New York City.

Is it just me or is that a lot of pressure to put on an unproven actor? I could understand this move if Pettyfer's upcoming projects were proven successes, but we won't know that for a couple months and Pettyfer's previous work consists of three other movies, none of which have made any money in theaters. To be honest, this sounds like a bluff on the part of the studio to try and get Pettyfer for the role. Should he turn it down, don't expect them to abandon the project entirely.

Writer Hired For The Lethal Weapon Reboot

One title on the list was the classic action buddy cop seriesLethal Weaponand now, apparently, they've already hired a writer.Deadlinereports that Will Beall, the writer of the upcomingTales From The Gangster Squad, has been hired by Warner Bros. to update the Mel Gibson/Danny Glover series for the modern era with a new cast. According to the report, Beall's pitch was to maintain the"hard R-rated edgy street cop movie"tone of the original.

Only rubbing salt in the wound is the fact that the article mentions that the studio has been"messing around"with a treatment for aLethal Weapon 5by none other than Shane Black (he wrote the first film and created the characters), but decided not to do it because it would involve bringing back the original cast and they don't want to be involved with the mess that is Mel Gibson's image. Here's a thought: how about giving Shane Black the opportunity script the remake? Sure, he might turn it down, but why not give the creator of the universe a crack at it? It was recently reported that Black would be directing an adaptation of the Manga comicDeathNote, so it's not as though the guy is retired. Here's hoping that this is a project that eventually finds its way back into development hell.

And yet there's still one more project coming up in Reynolds' near-ish future, the thrillerSafe House, in which he'll play a CIA agent transporting a criminal (played by Denzel Washington) to, uh, a safe house. Tim McGraw confirmedlast monththat he's part of the film as well, and now it's finally time for a woman to get in on the action plot.

Latino Reviewhas the scoop that the French actress and singer Nora Arnezeder will star as"Ana Ramos,"described in their headline as his"hot girlfriend"but not much beyond that. In addition the producers are apparently eyeing Jeff Bridges for the role of"Deputy Vice Director Harland Whitford,"a name and title that screams fellow CIA agent-- but then Bridges is bound to be in demand for virtually any role these days, so who knows how likely he is to take it. Either waySafe Houseis set for a February 10 release date next year, so shooting will be starting within the next few months with whoever they do have on board. If you're totally over Marion Cotillard, looks like there's another French actress coming up to have a major crush on.

Trailer For Darren Lynn Bousman's Mother's Day Leaks Online

"Trailer For Darren Lynn Bousman's Mother's Day Leaks Online"src="http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news_img/22670/mother_s_day_22670.jpg"style="border: 1px solid black;margin:1px;margin-left:5px;position:relative;"align="right"vspace="3">I'm always amazed by the number of remakes that come out of the horror genre. Every single one of us have had our own experiences of horror and/or terror, yet the same stories are recycled year after year. Hell, Michael Bay has a production company, Platinum Dunes, almost entirely dedicated to producing horror remakes, with six on their resume since 2003 (and they've all be horrible, by the way). Still, Hollywood loves nothing more than a brand, so allow me to bring you the trailer for the next horror film to be given a modern day feel.

Bloody Disgustinghas gotten its hands on what they are calling a"German Sales promo"(it's not actually in German) for Darren Lynn Bousman'sMother's Day. Starring Rebecca De Mornay, Jaime King, Deborah Ann Woll, Briana Evigan, Alexa Vega, and Shawn Ashmore, the film is about a mother and her two degenerate sons who break into their old home and terrorize the new residents. The film is a remake of the 1980s Charles Kaufman movie starring Beatrice Pons.

Check out the trailer below.

As much as I hate the concept behind horror remakes, I will admit that this is a pretty effective trailer. I've long been a fan of Rebecca De Mornay at she seems right at home here, playing a mom who never feels more proud of her sons than when they are raping and murdering. Provided they don't resort to cliches and actually pry some originality from the rehashed story, I don't see why this couldn't work.Mother's Dayhits theaters on April 1st.

James Gray May Direct Action Thriller The Gray Man Next

"James Gray May Direct Action Thriller The Gray Man Next"src="http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news_img/22624/james_gray_22624.jpg"style="border: 1px solid black;margin:1px;margin-left:5px;position:relative;"align="right"vspace="3">James Gray, whose last filmTwo Loverssuffered mightily when Joaquin Phoenix dominated its press tour with his stunt documented inI'm Still Here, is finally ready to make another film nearly two years after that movie was released. According toDeadlinehe'll be directingThe Gray Man, an adaptation of Mark Greaney's thriller novel about a CIA agent fighting for his life in many locations across Europe. It doesn't have anything to do with the Bourne franchise, technically, but I'm sure you can see the connections just as easily as I can.

Even Gray recognizes the similarities, and as he told Deadline, he's planning to actively work against anyBournecomparisons by employing a style totally different from the one Paul Greengrass made iconic on two of those films:

"What he did was a documentary-style objective approach, and he owns that style. I want to do the opposite, which feels like a good way to sympathize with a professional hitman. You humanize him by never distancing yourself from his experience. This story has emotional stakes that enable me to do that."
Gray says what he plans to do will resemble the famous car chase scene inWe Own The Night, in which much of the scene plays out from the point of view of Joaquin Phoenix's character:"Almost every shot was from Joaquin's point of view, inside that car, and I want to make a whole movie with that POV."

I really likedWe Own The Nightas well asTwo Lovers, and I'm glad to see Gray returning to movies after seemingly getting discouraged byTwo Loversunderperforming. The real question is whether or not he'll bring back Phoenix, who has starred in three of Gray's four films so far. I had a feeling the relationship had soured thanks to theI'm Still Hereantics, but casting on this one may be the final proof.

The script forThe Gray Manwas adapted by Adam Cozad, who also wrote the upcoming Jack Ryan rebootMoscow. He's doing a rewrite on the film as well even as Gray writes his own personal, smaller movie; he'll decide which one to make first based on which one finishes first, so either way Gray will be busy again very soon.

Michael Douglas Learning Piano For Liberace Biopic

"Michael Douglas Learning Piano For Liberace Biopic"src="http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news_img/22613/michael_douglas_22613.jpg"style="border: 1px solid black;margin:1px;margin-left:5px;position:relative;"align="right"vspace="3">Fresh off his ass kicking of cancer, Michael Douglas is already back at work, this time doing some prep for his upcoming role as Liberace. The flamboyant musician delighted crowds for decades with his over the top theatrics, even if they caused him to be ridiculed by more conservative critics. Looking back, he’s really more famous for being a running joke, but for almost twenty years, he was one of, if not the, highest paid performers in the world. Audiences loved him, and that along, is enough to warrant a nuanced and sophisticated portrayal.

One ingredient of that nuanced and sophisticated portrayal is learning the piano, and while Douglas may not be healthy enough to train for some of his more creative showmanship maneuvers, his fingers are nimble enough to fiddle with the ivories. That’s a lot more important than it might seem. No one expects an actor to be as good as the entertainer they’re portraying, but the more basics you have down, the more the director can play with the camera and shoot from different angles.

On a more sympathetic note: the writers and editors here at Cinema Blend would like to send out rousing approval for Michael Douglas’ efforts in fending off cancer. The sixty-six year old actor is a brilliant artist, a good human being and a treasure for anyone that cares about film. We wish him the best in his continuing recovery, as well as in all his future creative pursuits.

David O. Russell May Re-Write And Possibly Direct 2 Guns

"David O. Russell May Re-Write And Possibly Direct 2 Guns"src="http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news_img/22585/2_Guns_22585.jpg"style="border: 1px solid black;margin:1px;margin-left:5px;position:relative;"align="right"vspace="3">With the epic amount of confusion surrounding the adaptation of the videogameUncharted(is Mark Wahlberg 100% confirmed? Will the movie involve a family plot?) it's entirely possible that it will be a while before the project gets made. As a result, director David O. Russell, who is coming off the massively successfulThe Fighter, might find himself falling into something else, and that may end up being a tryst with Vince Vaughn.

Deadlinereports that Russell is in talks to re-write and possibly direct an adaptation of the comic2 Guns, with Vaughn toplining the cast. As we reported back inOctober, when Owen Wilson was rumored to be joining the project (this new story has no mention of Wilson), the story is about a DEA agent and a Naval Intelligence officer who are investigating each other and, per request from their employers, end up robbing a bank together. After getting away with it, however, the realize that the money that they have just stolen is dirty and they need to find out who it belongs to before they're hunted down.

Provided the film has the right tone, not only could this film be great, but it could be a perfect project for David O. Russell, who hasn't made anything even close to resembling an action movie sinceThree Kingsin 1999. It also could be the right movie and director combo to get Vince Vaughn's career really back on track. There's a lot to like about this idea.

Anne Hathaway, Jessica Biel And More Auditioning For Dark Knight Rises

"Anne Hathaway, Jessica Biel And More Auditioning For Dark Knight Rises"src="http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news_img/22568/The_Dark_Knight_Rises_22568.jpg"style="border: 1px solid black;margin:1px;margin-left:5px;position:relative;"align="right"vspace="3">Apparently rumors aboutThe Dark Knight Risescome in bunches, as there's another story out there to cast light on what we reportedjust hours agoabout potential casting for female leads in the film. According toTHREva Green and Naomi Watts have not in fact been cast-- we knew that was just a rumor anyway-- but Anne Hathaway, Keira Knightley and Jessica Biel top the list of women auditioning on the Warner Bros. lot this week for either of the two big female roles, one of them the villainess Talia al Ghul. The other is described as a"love interest,"though there's no word if the character is, as earlier reported, Vicki Vale.

Other actresses auditioning are Kate Mara, Charlotte Riley and Gemma Arterton; you may not have heard of Riley before, but given that she's engaged to Tom Hardy, who's already confirmed for a role in the film, she might have an extra edge. And as a matter of fact, the studio really is interested in Naomi Watts for a part, but she's shooting a movie in Thailand right now and can't come to the lot for meetings.

Of course, this is another one of those"shortlist"stories that could result in nothing-- we heard endless lists of names considered to play Lisbeth Salander inGirl With The Dragon Tattoobefore Rooney Mara seemingly swooped out of nowhere to nab it. It's possible we'll hear tomorrow that Hathaway and Biel have been cast, and just as likely that three months from now we'll learn Nicole Kidman will be playing both parts. OK, maybe not that likely. But anyway, just because this is coming from the pretty well-connected Hollywood Reporter, do not take this as Gospel until contracts are signed.

Michelle Pfeiffer To Play Chris Pine's Mom In Welcome To People

"Michelle Pfeiffer To Play Chris Pine's Mom In Welcome To People"src="http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news_img/22546/michelle_pfeiffer_22546.jpg"style="border: 1px solid black;margin:1px;margin-left:5px;position:relative;"align="right"vspace="3">When directing your first film, it's usually filled with actors nobody has ever heard of, but most directors don't kick off their career by writing the scripts behindMission: Impossible III,TransformersandStar Trek. I am, of course, referring to Alex Kurtzman, who is currently in pre-production for his feature directorial debut,Welcome To People. The writer-cum-director has already lined up a stellar cast that includes the likes of Chris Pine, Elizabeth Banks and Olivia Wilde and now he's added another name.

EWreports that Michelle Pfeiffer has joined the cast of the drama and will play the mother of Chris Pine's character. In the film, Pfeiffer's estranged husband dies and when her son, comes home, a major secret is uncovered: he has a sister (played by Elizabeth Banks). He is then charged to bring her a $150,000 inheritance. Production is scheduled to begin next week and the film will be released in 2012.

From a cast and logline standpoint, this movie sounds like it could be really great. Provided that the tone isn't too erratic and it never sinks into melodrama, there's a lot of potential here. Let's hope that Kurtzman can successfully make a movie without giant robots, spies or lasers.

Ron Howard Still Teasing Arrested Development Movie

"Ron Howard Still Teasing Arrested Development Movie"src="http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news_img/22521/arrested_development_22521.jpg"style="border: 1px solid black;margin:1px;margin-left:5px;position:relative;"align="right"vspace="3">Yeah, we know. You’re tired of hearing about theArrested Developmentmovie because it’s been talked about for so long that there’s virtually no way that it could actually happen. We’re just as tired of it as you are, but this news comes from someone with kind of a lot of clout in the industry, the show’s producer and narrator Ron Howard.

Howard spoke withComingSoonduring a promo tour for his filmThe Dilemmaand had this to say about Mitch Hurwitz and theADfilm:

I won't be directing theArrested Developmentmovie, but Mitch Hurwitz is determined. I know we've been saying this for awhile, but I'd be really surprised if we didn't have anArrested Developmentmovie sooner rather than later.

This by no means says that we’ll definitely going to see this film anytime soon, just that they’re still trying regardless of all the issues they’ve had up until now. Persistence has worked in the past, however, so maybe if they keep pushing for it eventually the stars will align and every piece of the puzzle will fit together. Until then, don’t get your hopes up.

New Transformers: Dark Of The Moon Set Photos Show Off Megatron In Truck Form

"New Transformers: Dark Of The Moon Set Photos Show Off Megatron In Truck Form"src="http://www.cinemablend.com/images/news_img/22520/Transformers_Dark_of_the_Moon_22520.jpg"style="border: 1px solid black;margin:1px;margin-left:5px;position:relative;"align="right"vspace="3">Last month, an image of aTransformerstoy came online and the wide spread belief was that it was asmall, plastic versionof what Megatron will look like in this summer's blockbuster,Transformers: Dark of the Moon. If that toy is indeed Megatron, then we now have our first look at the real deal.

Inside Linehas posted three new set photos from the third film in the Michael Bay-directed franchise, and while it appears to be a lot dirtier than the toy version and the tattered cloth is in the wrong place, one can assume that the pictures below are of the evil leader of the Decepticons. Check out two of the images below as well as a comparison image of the toy, and head over toInside Lineto get a new look at one of the Autobots known as Wreckers.
